Seoul, Dec. 25 — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently inspected the construction of a nuclear-powered submarine alongside his daughter, Ju Ae, and oversaw the test-firing of long-range surface-to-air missiles, state media KCNA reported.
Wednesday’s missile test, conducted near North Korea’s east coast, successfully destroyed targets 200 km (120 miles) away, demonstrating the country’s strategic high-altitude missile capabilities. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the launch and stated they had been aware of preparations.
Kim’s visit to the submarine construction site highlighted an 8,700-ton nuclear-powered vessel capable of launching missiles. The project is part of North Korea’s broader effort to modernize its navy and expand military capabilities. KCNA noted that multiple attack destroyers and nuclear submarines are being developed to accelerate national defense readiness.
Experts indicate the submarine hull is equipped with a nuclear reactor and the vessel is nearly ready to sail. Kim emphasized that advancing nuclear capabilities and modernizing the navy are essential for national security, particularly in response to South Korea and U.S. military actions in the region.
KCNA also criticized the recent docking of the U.S. nuclear-powered submarine Greeneville in South Korea, describing it as escalating regional tensions, and expressed concern over Japan’s potential nuclear ambitions.
