At least five people were killed and 35 others injured in a bomb explosion at a packed mosque in Gamboru market, Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria, during evening prayers, according to police.
Police spokesperson Nahum Daso confirmed the casualties, while unverified social media footage shows dust and chaos in the market area following the blast.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but militants have previously targeted mosques and crowded areas in north-eastern Nigeria using suicide attacks and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Maiduguri remains a focal point of the long-running insurgency by Boko Haram and its offshoot, the Islamic State West Africa Province.
Since 2009, Boko Haram has carried out military operations in Borno State in an attempt to establish an Islamic caliphate. Despite ongoing security measures, sporadic attacks on civilians continue to occur in the region.
