A cyclone has begun affecting a small group of islands located off the western coast of Australia, raising concerns of strong winds and heavy rainfall during the Christmas period.
Weather authorities report that the system is moving at speeds of up to 100 km/h and is expected to bring cyclonic winds and intense rainfall to the region. As a result, cyclone advisories have been issued for residents of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.
Residents have been advised to remain indoors on Christmas Day (December 25) as a safety precaution. Authorities have also warned of the possibility of sudden flooding, urging the community to stay alert and follow official instructions.
The Cocos (Keeling) Islands are located in the Indian Ocean, roughly 2,000 kilometers northwest of the Western Australian coast, between Australia and Sri Lanka. The island group is home to approximately 600 residents.
Although the territory consists of 27 islands, only two islands are permanently inhabited.
